National Insurance Number Collection & Validation Now Live
Release: v1.0.2
As part of our continued work to meet HMRC Making Tax Digital (MTD) requirements, version 1.0.2 introduces the capture and validation of landlords' National Insurance Numbers (NINO) during onboarding.
Why We Collect Your National Insurance Number
HMRC's Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD ITSA) requires a landlord's National Insurance Number to be submitted alongside quarterly tax returns. This is used by HMRC to verify the identity of the taxpayer. Without a valid NINO on record, any submission attempt will be rejected by HMRC.
By collecting and validating this information during onboarding, the platform ensures your account is fully ready for MTD-compliant submissions before you reach the filing stage.
What's Changed
Onboarding Step: NINO Entry
A new field has been added to the onboarding flow asking for your National Insurance Number. This step is required and must be completed before you can proceed.
Real-Time Format Validation
The platform validates your NINO client-side as you type. The required format is:
Two letters — Six digits — One letter
For example: AB123456C
If the format does not match, you will see an inline error message prompting you to correct the entry before continuing. This prevents submission errors caused by malformed NINOs reaching HMRC's API.
Accepted format pattern:
[A-Z]{2}[0-9]{6}[A-Z]
Secure Storage
Once validated, your National Insurance Number is stored securely. It is used solely for the purpose of HMRC MTD submissions and identity verification.
Who Is Affected
All landlords completing onboarding from v1.0.2 onwards will be required to provide their National Insurance Number. Existing users who have not yet provided their NINO may be prompted to supply it before their next quarterly submission.
