v1.0.424 — Fixing the National Insurance Number Navigation Bug
v1.0.424 — Fixing the National Insurance Number Navigation Bug
Release: v1.0.424
What happened
In the MTD Setup Checklist — the "Complete these steps to start filing with HMRC" screen accessible from the Overview — users who had completed 5 of 6 steps (83%) were presented with a final action item:
Add National Insurance Number — Required for all HMRC MTD submissions.
Clicking the link on that checklist item was supposed to take users directly to the place in Settings where they could enter their NI number. Instead, it navigated to the wrong section of Settings, leaving users stranded with no obvious way to complete the step.
This was a frustrating dead-end at the very last stage of MTD onboarding — when users were ready to start filing.
What's fixed
The navigation link on the "Add National Insurance Number" checklist item now correctly deep-links to the Personal Details section of Settings, where the National Insurance Number field is located. Clicking the link will take you straight there so you can enter your NI number and mark the final checklist step as complete.
How to complete this step
- Go to the Overview and open the MTD Setup Checklist.
- If "Add National Insurance Number" is still shown as incomplete, click the link.
- You will be taken directly to Settings → Personal Details.
- Enter your National Insurance Number in the field provided and save.
- Return to the checklist — all 6 steps should now show as complete and you will be ready to file with HMRC.
Why your NI number is required
HMRC mandates that a valid National Insurance Number is included in all MTD ITSA (Income Tax Self Assessment) submissions. Without it, quarterly updates and annual declarations cannot be accepted by HMRC. Completing this step is a prerequisite for making your first submission.
