Cleaner Sidebar Navigation: Fewer Groups, Less Friction

Cleaner Sidebar Navigation: Fewer Groups, Less Friction

Version: v0.1.339

We've restructured the application sidebar to reduce cognitive load — particularly for new users finding their way around deposit workflows, compliance tools, and analytics.

The Problem We Solved

The sidebar previously had 7 collapsible groups:

  1. Active Work
  2. Portfolio
  3. Inspections
  4. Deposit & Disputes
  5. Compliance & Analytics
  6. Admin
  7. Tools

This structure introduced two specific pain points:

1. Split deposit workflows

Items that belong to the same end-to-end process were spread across two separate groups:

  • Active Work held: Negotiation, Deposit Releases
  • Deposit & Disputes held: Deduction Claims, Adjudication, Dispute Outcomes, Landlord Portal

Users working through a deposit deduction had to jump between groups that appeared unrelated by name. "Why is a Deposit Release in Active Work but a Deduction Claim in Deposit & Disputes?" was a common point of confusion.

2. Urgency mismatch in Compliance & Analytics

This group combined two very different types of items:

  • Compliance — carries badge alerts and requires timely action
  • Analytics — a low-urgency, exploratory tool

Grouping them together buried urgent compliance alerts alongside passive reporting, making it harder to triage at a glance.

What We Changed

Deposit & Disputes merged into Active Work → renamed Disputes & Releases

All deposit-related workflow items now live in a single group called Disputes & Releases:

  • Negotiation
  • Deposit Releases
  • Deduction Claims
  • Adjudication
  • Dispute Outcomes
  • Landlord Portal

This reflects how users actually work: deposit releases and deduction claims are part of the same process, and should be found in the same place.

Compliance & Analytics split into Compliance and Insights

  • Compliance is now a standalone top-level entry (or nested under Portfolio), giving its badge alerts appropriate visual prominence.
  • Analytics moves into a new Insights group — a label that better matches the exploratory, non-urgent nature of the content.

Landlord Portal and Adjudication flagged for future sub-item promotion

These two items are rarely accessed as standalone destinations. A future update will evaluate moving them to sub-items within specific tenancy workflow contexts, reducing top-level nav clutter further.
