Product Category Taxonomy & Tagging — v0.1.5

Product Category Taxonomy & Tagging

Introduced in v0.1.5

Every PropTech product discovered by the platform is automatically classified into a defined SaaS category taxonomy. Categories power dashboard filtering and feed directly into the Revenue Potential scoring model.

The Category Taxonomy

The platform recognises the following PropTech SaaS categories:

CategoryDescription
CRMCustomer relationship management, sales pipelines, lead tracking
Property ManagementEnd-to-end landlord, asset, and portfolio management
Tenant ExperienceResident portals, communications, onboarding, and lifecycle
MaintenanceWork orders, facilities management, and repair coordination
ListingsProperty marketing, portal syndication, and availability management
AnalyticsMarket intelligence, reporting, dashboards, and business intelligence
ComplianceRegulatory, legal, audit, and certification tooling

Products may be tagged with more than one category where their feature set spans multiple segments.

How Tagging Works

Category tagging is performed automatically during the ingestion pipeline — no manual intervention is required.

1. Directory Tag Mapping (Primary)

When a source directory (such as Kerfuffle) already labels a product with its own tags, those tags are mapped directly onto the platform's taxonomy. This is the highest-confidence signal and is always preferred when available.

2. AI Classification (Fallback)

Where a directory provides no tags, the AI classifier analyses the product's name, description, scraped features, and any available review text to infer the most appropriate category or categories. This fallback ensures full coverage across all discovered products regardless of source quality.

Dashboard Filtering by Category

The main product dashboard exposes a Category filter. Use it to:

  • Narrow the ranked results list to a single market segment (e.g. view only Maintenance tools)
  • Compare opportunity scores within a category to identify the strongest targets
  • Combine category filter with other sort dimensions (composite score, review volume, pricing tier)

Filtering does not affect the underlying scores — it scopes the view without recalculating rankings.

Category in Revenue Potential Scoring

The Revenue Potential component of each product's composite opportunity score now incorporates category-level market sizing. This means:

  • A product in a large, well-established category (e.g. CRM) is weighted against the known size and saturation of that market.
  • A product in a narrower segment (e.g. Compliance) is assessed against the typical deal sizes and buyer profiles for that niche.
  • AI-tagged categories carry the same scoring weight as directory-mapped categories.

This produces more accurate and comparable Revenue Potential scores across products that sit in very different segments of the PropTech market.

Re-ingesting Existing Products

Products discovered before v0.1.5 do not have category tags assigned. They will be tagged automatically the next time they are re-ingested or re-analysed. To trigger a re-analysis for a specific product, use the Re-analyse action from the product dossier page.
